“Volleyball practice is just waiting for me!” sotetru posted on Twitter.
“#volleyballislife” Bokuto replied on his newly acquired friend’s post.
Sotetru, was his username, retweeted and liked his reponse but had nothing to add.
Volleyball was literally the reason they started talking. Sotetru had posted something similar on Twitter before and Bokuto arose at the opportunity to bond over his favorite sport. That had happened about, what, 2 weeks ago? Bokuto liked the guy. And he felt like he was pretty trustworthy.
Going to his own volleyball practice, Bokuto jumped around a bit. He was always excited to play, even if it was just practice.
“Bokuto-san, could you stay still for a while?” Akaashi, his houkai, asked clearly embarassed. They were walking around thousands of other students.
“I can try.” He did. He stood still for maybe a milisecond before caving in. “Nope, sorry, can’t do it.”
Akaashi sighed. “I figured.”
After practice was done, he went to meet one of his best friends, Kuroo, at his house. Kuroo also happened to be his crush for a while now.
He knocked on his friend’s door but only after breathing in deep about 3 times. Ever since he notice the feelings he had for Kuroo, being around him was proven to be a challenge.
Kuroo opened the door, his usual bed hair covering his right eye. “Come in bro.”
That, that right there was the reason why it was hard being around Kuroo. He only saw Bokuto as his ‘bro’ and nothing else. So he tried shutting his feelings down, since there was no future for the two. But that too was proven harder than he’d expected.
Bokuto stepped inside his friend’s house, feeling pretty anxious. What were they even doing? What did friends usually do in each other’s houses? What the hell was happening to Bokuto, he knew the answers to all of that! He was just nervous. And nervous was simply an understatement.
Both went to Kuroo’s room, where he had some DVD’s spread out across his bed.
“So, what movie do you want to watch?” He asked.
Oh for course. Bokuto had forgotten it, obviously. But it was movie night! Bokuto was a sucker for animated movies, so he picked the only animated movie Kuroo had: Disney’s Moana.
After Kuroo retrieved all of the other DVDs in his bed and put Moana on, both boys set on it.
They would sing along to every song with lyrics that they knew, which was close to every single song in the movie. Bokuto would even put on the theatrics and interpret the characters as he sang. He was really nervous just being around his crush, but he was also still himself.
Once movie night was over, the friends said their goodbyes and Bokuto was on his way home. But of course he couldn’t help thinking about the way Kuroo looked so happy while singing his favorite song from the movie. He couldn’t help thinking about how his nose would wiggle a bit whenever he was about to sneeze, and thinking about how Kuroo sat in his bed - so laid back and comfortable -, and about how Bokuto’s heart would just jump out of his chest whenever Kuroo leaned closer to him. Of course he couldn’t help but think about all of that.
All the way back home, Bokuto just wished those feelings would go away. He couldn’t have a crush on his best friend! It would screw up everything!
He lied in bed the moment he set foot into his bedroom. His parents were still working so he was alone at home. The first thing he did was take out his phone and tweet.
“Ugggh what the fuck do I do now?!”
Soon enough, Sotetru had sent him an direct message.
“What’s wrong buddy?”
Bokuto decided to just tell him. “I have a crush on my best friend, and he only sees me as a friend.”
“Wait he? You’re a guy too, right?” Sotetru replied in a matter of seconds.
“Do you have a problem with that?” Bokuto asked hoping really badly that wasn’t the case. The guy was cool, it would suck if he was homophobic.
“Oh no no. Not at all. I was just wondering. Either way, I know how that hurts.” Sotetru answered. “Are you sure he only sees you as a friend though?”
“He hasn’t ever given any reason for me to think otherwise.”
“And have you?”
“No, not really.”
“What’s he like?”
Oh Bokuto could spend the whole day talking about Kuroo.
“Eh, he’s this pretty tall guy, taller than me! Only by two inches too… He has this bed hair thing going on, which he hates! But I love it, it suits him a lot. His hair’s all black and his eyes are kinda brownish? He plays volleyball too, he’s actually the captain of his team! He’s a third year, same as me but we don’t go to the same school. I don’t get to see him a lot, which kills me inside. He’s wicked smart, he takes college classes and he loves Chemistry jokes. He’s also a big tease and he has this joker exterior but I know he’s pretty sensitive, he’s just really good at hiding it. He hides his pain even from me and his best friend at his school. He looks awesome in his team’s colors… red and black. He also loves animated movies, we were just watching one at his house about an hour ago. I loved but hated every second of it. He was so close but so far away… I hate this, I hate this so much!”
Without realizing, Bokuto started crying. He wanted to say this was unfair, but really how was it? He liked his best friend but he didn’t like him back. It’s not like he can control Kuroo’s feelings, much less his own. But it hurt, it hurt like hell and he felt his heart breaking into pieces.
This will kill me. Bokuto thought to himself. This would be the death of me.
His internet friend didn’t reply for a while. Bokuto started to wonder if he would at any point before the next day.
He eventually did. “Bokuto.”
“Yeah?” He replied before realizing something. “WAIT! I never told you my name, how do you know it??”
No replies.
“Sotetru!” He sent. “How the hell do you know my name?!”
Nothing. Bokuto was beginning to be scared. This was turning into one of those creepy horror movies. And he did not like one bit of it.
He tried the stranger again and again but he never got any replies. Maybe he just wouldn’t be hearing from him, ever again?
Bokuto still pondered over that as there was a knock at his door. He practically jumped off his bed. Should he answer it? What if it was the stranger? He knew Bokuto’s name, knowing his address wouldn’t surprise him at this point.
He took a knife from the kitchen and hid it behind his back as he slowly opened the front door. After it was opened a few inches, he saw the familiar black hair outside.
“Kuroo!” He almost hugged him. “What are you doing here?!”
Kuroo ignored the question asking his own. “I’m your crush, Bokuto?” Bokuto suddenly felt cold and shivery. He dropped the knife.”Bokuto is that a knife? What were you doing with a knife?!”
“I-I thought you were a stranger, I-I had this friend of my on twitter call me by my name even though I never told him so I was scared okay!” Bokuto stammered, feeling defensive.
“I’m the friend, you idiot.” Kuroo directly looked at him.
“What?” He felt his eyes pop. He just told his crush… about his crush?! “H-how?”
“My user name is literally an anagram for Tetsuro.” His friend laughed. “You really are oblivious.”
“W-well I…” Bokuto didn’t have any comebacks.
Kuroo looked at him again, with those brownish eyes that send stupid shivers down his stupid spine. “You didn’t answer, Koutarou.”
That was the first time Bokuto ever hear Kuroo use his first name. He was serious about this.
“I’ll risk saying you already know the answer to that.” Bokuto avoided his stare.
“I want to hear you say it!” Kuroo insisted.
“WHY?” Bokuto asked, feeling frustrated. He didn’t want to admit it to him, again. This time, in the flesh.
“Because if I hear you say it, then I know it’s real.” His friend whispered and it was so low Bokuto wondered if he heard correctly.
“A-And you w-want it to be r-real?” Bokuto went back to being one stammering mess.
“Will you just answer my damn question!” Kuroo snapped. “I asked it first…”
In that moment Bokuto just said to himself screw it!! “Yes, Kuroo. I’ve had a crush on you for the past… I don’t know how many months. But I’ll understand if this makes you feel uncomfortable-”
Bokuto was shut up by Kuroo’s lips on his.
“Finally you dork.” Kuroo smiled, his face still close to Bokuto’s. He could smell his breath, it smelled like mint.
“You… I…” Bokuto could barely speak. “This… You… What?”
“I’ve had a crush on you, for I don’t know how many months now too.” Kuroo explained. “I just never imagined you felt the same.”
It was Bokuto’s turn to kiss Kuroo. “Does this put your mind at ease?”
