An old makeup look i did for 4/20 in 2017 lol
Got another palette so here's some face.
Why I Don’t Buy KVD Cosmetics
Back in the mid 2000’s I absolutely loved to watch tattoo reality shows such as Miami Ink and later on LA Ink. With tattooing becoming, more mainstream I could not wait for the day when I could have my first tattoo; loving the fact, I could be a canvas for an artist.
This is where I was first introduced to Kat Von D. I thought her tattoos were amazing and beautiful. Her portraiture in black and white something to behold. Her aesthetic and style also called to me being an angst ridden want to be Goth teen.
Though staged for the show, even at the time of loving the show and enjoying Kat Von D on said shows, her manufactured bitchy attitude was not my favorite. She came across as a bully and just bitchy to be a bitch! Which I was definitely not a fan of, though most likely produced for reality show drama; I feel it could be a by-product of a truth.
Skip ahead a few years later and I remember walking into a Sephora for the first time. Kat Von D’s makeup caught my eye and I was extremely drawn in by the alternative artsy packaging and style of the whole brand. I also enjoyed the fact the makeup is vegan and of a higher end product feeling accomplished when I could buy a little something here and there in my late teens.
I continued to buy and support Kat Von D products for years. I even supported her during the accusations held against Jeffree Star period and drama ( I also don’t buy or support his brand ) I have supported her brand and her until last year.
I first began to notice a more pretentious air forming around her posts and comments. Which at first I shrugged off, she is the stereotypical artsy type. The type of artist/creator who clings to being the other and side eyes the normies kind of attitude which is just eye roll content.
I hate that kind of attitude as its give alternative people a bad name…but I chose to ignore it over all. But as furthered information of suspected antisemitism and bad choices ( including the choice of fiancé ) with her brand began to appear, I began to take little step back from her products.
However, the final straw, which was the same for many KVD product buyers, was the whole antivaxx and vegan rant on her Instagram over the choices she was making for her unborn child at the time. I am for choices for parents ( informed choices and not lies propagated as facts ), but I am wholly and completely against the antivaxx movement and lies spread amongst the internet over vaccines.
I saw the whole post as a way of giving the middle finger to society and what society sees as right. It left a horrible taste in my mouth over her actions and words. A child and their health are not a statement to be made as an alternative/edgy way of living. Even if she didn’t mean it that way, she didn’t hold to her statement and when backlash began coming her way, she back pedaled on her statement weeks later.
I just could not bare it further. The brand and Kat Von D herself completely marred in my vision. I told myself, I myself would never buy another piece of KVD Cosmetics. She is too problematic to support any further ( as well as her crappy now husband Rafael Reyes- go and watch an interesting video on this guy recently made by Ready To Glare on YouTube. )
Family and friends still purchase her makeup for me, which I will use as they are unawares and I don’t want to throw away makeup as that’s a waste. Plus, I have been looking into supporting some smaller, indie brands as of late and hoping to expand my horizons of makeup obsession!
