Earlier this spring I filmed this short film with my good friend Cliff Kapono in Santa Cruz, CA. 

Vissla's Cliff Kapono met up with fellow Creator & Innovator, Travis Reynolds, at the world famous Haut Shop board building space in Santa Cruz, CA earlier this spring. What started as a brief chat about surfboard design, quickly resulted in the creation of a traditional, wooden alaia shaped out of paulownia wood and coated with linseed oil. From start to finish the process took about four hours, which gave Cliff the opportunity to test ride the alaia by lunchtime.

This session will go down as one of the hardest days of swimming in my life. After three days of shooting from land, I decided that I had to give it an attempt. With only one fin, I inched my way out onto the reef and did my best to time the sets before my swim. Unfortunately, I couldn’t hold my ground with all the water moving from the relentless waves and I hopped into a mini-river of current and was swept down the beach. I dove under about 25 waves before I was finally out of the impact zone.
