There wasn’t really one particular moment when he realized it- but there was a moment he said it- when he told her he loved her for the first time and not as a friend or a sister or whatever their relationship had entailed previously…  But real true love. 

Sam had a bad day and he wasn’t there for her- he was off at the library trying to read up on whatever he could find, trying to learn everything he missed whether it be political, social, or otherwise.  Time always passed quickly when he was doing this, and he didn’t realize that it was passed midnight until he got a text from Sam.  It was obvious from the text that she was drunk- she’d misspelled basically every word and mentioned something about a bar from what he could make out, so he immediately collected his things and ran as fast as he could to her favorite bar where he found her.  With some guy draped over her.  They weren’t doing anything necessarily, Sam was just sulking and speaking incoherently about something and the man had his arm over her.  Kyle immediately hated that man more than anyone.  Ever.   Not fearing him even though he was twice Kyle’s size, he approached, fire in his eyes and shoved the man off, only to be hugged tight by a very very drunk Sam.  The man looked furious, but upon seeing Sam all over Kyle the way she was when she hadn’t paid any attention to him whatsoever seemed to drive him away with a huff.  Upon his exit, Kyle hastily took the drink from Sam’s fist and set it on the counter, paying her tab with the small amount of cash he had on him, then scooped her up and carried her to her dorm.  After laying her down on the bed and climbing in next to her, he kissed her forehead, looking at her with concern and affection, “I love you Sam.  I know that now.  And not like a brother or best friend, but I really love you.  And I know I shouldn’t tell you this now- that I should tell you when you’re sober…  And I will!  But I need to say it now too.  I need you to know.” with that he tucked her in and held her close, the smell of alcohol almost overwhelming on her.  But he kissed her regardless and held her until she fell asleep, not sleeping much himself that night because he couldn’t stop thinking about her and them and how things would change and how he could be better for her.
