For my friend @kynero because sometimes, writing is the way I let people know I love them and that I’m rooting for them. Here’s a piece about a girl with magic that manifests as flowers: particularly pink roses, which often signify happiness. I hope those bloom for you soon, dear: you deserve a world of pink roses all the time.

When life became too much, when her heart raced quick as the spinning universe, Cerise Watkins made flowers from her magic.

Tonight, she raced back home, bike flying down the street, using the hill to propel her forward as she sped from Darkglen College, back to her off-campus house. She felt like she was spiraling: heart thudding hard, breathless panting, cheeks and neck and ears covered in blotchy blush. It was making her itch to be tucked away, amongst her own element.

There was no reason why she felt this way: she never needed it. It may have been Missy Laurence, who had made her feel embarrassed in class that day. It could have been Professor Ash, who always gave back critical critiques that were more harsh than constructive. It could have even been Momma June, the lunch lady who -while normally quite pleasant- had been in a rather sour mood and messed up her order, making Cerise feel as if she couldn’t even ask for it to be remade.

Whatever the feeling inside her was, there was no particular rhyme or reason: Cerise simply was feeling anxiety as fizzy as soda, and she needed to let it out, simple as that.

She turned a corner and saw her house come into view, and as soon as she was there, Cerise threw down her bike at the garage and scrambled up to the the top of the backyard fence, vaulting over it and landing hard. She stumbled and had to tumble to catch her balance, but she kept moving, until she was at her greenhouse, a dozen feet away, leaf stripped trees surrounding it.

As soon as she opened the door, the smell of wetness hit her, and she sucked it in, already relaxing in her earthen element. There, it was always damp, and a bucket of water made the earth even wetter, letting her slip her dark brown feet below ground. She did so in silence, toeing the mud first as if testing cold water, then digging her toes in, feeling the earth creep up to her ankles and under her toenails.

There was ceremony in this: it wasn’t fancy magic like in her books, or even the kitchen witchery her mother practiced, but there was still a sort of reverence in being still, in connecting with the planet. With each breath, she felt herself sink deeper, let herself get swept away in the feeling. It was her own kind of ritual, made from her need to escape.

Cerise felt like the earth in this moment: flowers sprouted up from hands, blooming with fresh life, petals forming around one another until hundreds of frilled petals formed a soft pink rose. There was no steam, and no need: magic didn’t have to make sense. Much like anything, it existed, and that was enough for it to simply be.

More flowers popped up: varying from near white to deep pinks, stamen tucked between the velvet folds, and she let them rain down around her, building up to her knees as she let the magic flood her veins, stealing away the worry in her mind.

Flowers, Cerise realized, were temporary: they bloomed, then died, and much like emotions, they faded with a season. Her emotions had bloomed -bright, vibrantly filling her mind and chest and the lids of her eyes- but like the flowers, they were fading now, until they were a part of the earth’s heartbeat. She breathed in deep, inhaling the last of the scent of the roses, and decided to wait there a bit longer, letting her heart slow.

In her own time, Cerise stepped from the earth, calves and feet streaked with dirt. She giggled at the squish of mud: even at the feelings she had felt, which had bubbled up and faded, disappearing with the blooms.

“Better,” Cerise finally said, breaking the silence. She knew she’d cry tonight, knew the feelings would return, but she’d be alright. It, too, would pass, and if it didn’t, she always had the greenhouse to come to, and she could let it out there without worry. “Much better,” Cerise added, and she shook her head, letting out a sigh.

Something grazed her right big toe, and when Cerise looked down, she saw that one bloom -a pure, happy pink- remained and  she picked up the single rose that remained, carrying her blooming happiness with her as she made her way in for dinner, feet slapping wetly all the way.
