The “Snow Moon” (雪月) is the traditional name for February’s full moon, symbolising the lingering winter season. The Snow Moon resonates with the Japanese appreciation for seasonal transitions, as it precedes the arrival of “Risshun” (立春), the beginning of spring in the old lunar calendar.

A sculpted image of Eleven-Faced Thousand-Armed Kannon Bodhisattva (十一面千手観音菩薩) at Juhōji Temple (寿宝寺) in Kyotanabe, Kyoto Prefecture, dating to the Heian period (794-1185) according to documents found encased within the image during repairs in the 1660′s, one of the few to be indeed endowed with a thousand hands.

On Sunday morning, the moon was setting over the Mountains early in the morning, straddling Hirakata. I took the picture close to the Doshisha Kyotanabe campus. My pictures of the partial lunar eclipse didn’t work out as planned. The "Hunter's Moon" is often associated with spiritual and cultural significance. It is known as the "Tsuiki no Tsuki" or "Chushu no Meigetsu." The moon has been an integral part of Japanese culture, and its various phases have been linked to Shinto and Buddhist beliefs.
