her eyes are like burning, endless embers. twin suns yet to set between a dark forest of tall, shadow-clad trees. upon each blink, those suns eclipse. he has yet to say a word, let alone announce himself within her company with neither the sound of footsteps nor the clearing of a throat. he lingers instead, drifting behind one of the many pillars supporting the high church roof, clasping his fingers against the marble as his slender frame is masked by each and every one he passes. so sly, he moves undetected and unseen, a master of his professions including the matter of observation. not stalking. certainly not.
she paused. he followed suit. she began to walk and thus like her own shadow he leapt after her, following until they reached the darker end of the hallway. every breath of hers seems to echo, his own silent and controlled. but before neither she nor the phantom himself could enter through that last door, supposedly leading into the church’s largest and most decorated room, a distant door slams. heavy wood cracks the silence and the candles’ lights sway in shock.
“ shhh... there is... nothing to fear here, wandering angel. “ he sings, finally revealing himself with the flicker of the lights illuminating a mere half of his visage. the light certainly does no favour in reassuring the stranger of her supposed safety, for the shadows which it casts dance wickedly across his face, glinting against his mask and then illuminating the wild glint within his eyes. “ god may surely be minding his own even here, love. “ he steps closer, his smile warm and his voice, despite the musical-tones to it, friendly enough. “ here-- “ he reaches towards a candelabra, plucking it from the wall and lifting it between the two of them.
