Kyth, by @drkcatt
I'm overjoyed with how this turned out - the warmth and the details and the 🐻-ness are just perfect.
I love how every face Kyth makes in game is like 🥺🥹 like. so true
Kyth was not a good hunter, so Rair predicted that he would have had to travel far for easy game, and not as strong a flier, so would need a good wind under his wings. Rair found air currents with ease, gaining height and speed. The temperature was dropping as the night came on, but the lingering warmth in Rair’s blood would keep him active for hours yet.
He caught Kyth in mid-air, dropping beside him and twisting to match direction. Kyth looked heavy – well fed, and dropped a whole wingspan out of surprise. Rair flew close, wondering if Kyth would reciprocate. He clicked out a greeting, and Kyth flew closer so they spiralled together, heading for the ground. Rair hit the ground first, and Kyth landed beside him, his wings throwing up the dry earth.
Kyth came in close, pressing is face against Rair’s. Kyth’s scales were rough, close to shedding, but Rair did not mind them that way. He hooked his wings around Kyth and drew him down to the ground. He noted the little changes in Kyth’s body while they explored each other. Kyth was always worse at displaying affection, but he required very little encouragement to climb on top of Rair. It had been a long time, but not so long that they didn’t remember what it was like to be together.
They curled up on the ground together, covered with dust after. Rair inhaled the scent of Kyth’s skin, familiar, though different.
“Why did you find me?” Kyth asked.
“We need your engineering expertise,” Rair said, stroking the membrane of Kyth’s wing.
Kyth huffed with disbelief.
“Nikolai asked me to find someone who could understand the strange machines.”
Kyth clicked his tongue. “They are not our things. Why would I understand them?”
“Because you are clever with those sorts of things,” Rair answered. “Why are you hiding out here?”
Kyth hissed quietly. “I needed to be alone for a while.”
Rair did not think Kyth had wanted to just sit and think. “Why?” he asked, nuzzling the rough scales on Kyth’s shoulder. Kyth had often been a loner, but not this much of a loner.
Kyth made a long grumble in his throat. “I wanted to stop being female naturally.”
Rair made a snort of disbelief. “You?” Of all the people to experiment with that sort of change, Kyth seemed the unlikely sort.
“Yes, me,” Kyth said, grumpy. Solitude was the most comfortable way to get hormones back to the baseline. “I wanted to try it. I decided to do things properly. I was pregnant. I did not enjoy it much.” Kyth huffed. “Why are you so quiet? Are you offended I never wanted a child with you, or that I didn’t give it to you to raise too?”
Rair exhaled slowly. “I am not offended. I am surprised. I thought you were not interested in that.” When they had been in the same clan, Kyth had been the one with the fewest sexual partners, who always had the least sex possible, and spent the most time alone.
“I thought I should try it,” Kyth said.
Rair made a series of clicks in his throat. It seemed like it had not made Kyth happy. “We should move.”
“Should we?”
“I came with Vhys,” Rair said. “She will wonder where we are.”
“She will not,” Kyth said, amused. She would know they would have needed to spend some time alone. “What is wrong with you? Since when do you travel with… anyone?”
“She wanted an excuse to leave her clan,” Rair said. “She will be happy to see you.”
Kyth purred, stretching his wings. “It is getting cold.” He had already eaten, and he was thinking very fondly of the heater back in camp. “Let’s go meet her.”
