Honestly, if there had been another organization that Steve hated and fought, one that he would’ve been horrified to discover had taken over the world, but one that wasn’t so closely mentally equated with the Nazis, I would’ve just done find/replace and changed it to that one. But I’m not an expert at the comics, so I was forced to choose between HYDRA and all its bad connotations that might cause reader backlash and making up a fictional organization that would’ve kept readers from really empathizing with Steve’s plight.
And yes, you could say I’m a Bad Author for not being able to quickly and easily invoke that horror without having to “resort” to HYDRA, but this is a free fanfic. I don’t have the time or energy for that -- not when my next book is due in seven weeks, along with all of my other deadlines.
So far, no one who’s read the fic -- including at least one Jewish beta -- has objected at all to my use of HYDRA. This gives me hope. :)
