Lehigh & Hudson River Baldwin (built 1918) class 80 (USRA) Mikado 2-8-2 steam locomotive 82 is leading its EXTRA freight train with flags flying through a countryside grade crossing in New York State, late 1940's. The L&HR only had 4 of the 80 class (USRA) Mikado's, road numbers 80-83, and then another 4 Mikado's in the lighter 70 class, road numbers 70-73. You can see the fireman in his cab window. The consist of this train appears to be mostly boxcars with a gondola included. This freight train appears to be about 20 cars in length along with a caboose bringing up the rear end.

You can see the engineer looking ahead from his cab window while the train is slowing down to the 10 mph yard limit speed. Numerous freight trains were operated as EXTRA's during the WW2 years. Check out the sway bottom gondola coupled directly behind the first boxcar.

Lehigh & Hudson River Railway Baldwin 4-8-2 Mountain steam locomotive 10 leads a manifest freight train through the countryside in New York State, late 1940's. In this area there are seen rolling hills and low mountains along with some stiff grades in certain locations. The locomotive is operating with a clean stack at this time.

Lehigh & Hudson River Railway Baldwin (built 1929) 2-8-0 Consolidation steam locomotive 93 leads an EXTRA (with white flags flying) manifest freight train out of the New Haven Railroad Yard at Maybrook, New York, ca 1940's. These Consolidation steam locomotives were among the largest and most powerful of this type of steam locomotive with 71,500 lbs of starting tractive effort. The Western Maryland had the most powerful of all Consolidation classes that produced 74,000 lbs of starting tractive effort. Just look at the width of the oversized giant Wooten firebox provided for burning anthrecite coal. You can see the fireman in his cab window looking ahead. The two tracks that turnout from the yard lead to the Lehigh & Hudson River right-of-way. You can see many long gone railroad names of the freight cars, such as the Northern Pacific boxcar behind the tender, and to the left a ERIE hopper car along with a Southern Pacific - T&NO boxcar.

Lehigh & Hudson River Railway Baldwin (built 1925) 2-8-0 Consolidation steam locomotive 91 leads a manifest freight train along the main line in New York State, 1940's. Check out that large Wooten firebox for using anthracite coal. You may observe the engineer looking ahead in his cab window. A Great Northern boxcar is following the tender. Then next car appears to be an interesting B&O round top (Wagon Top) boxcar with the outside ribs.

Lehigh & Hudson River Railway caboose is bringing up the rear end of a manifest freight train as it enters the New Haven Railroad yard at Maybrook, New York, ca 1940's. The last four covered hopper cars in the train's consist appear to possibly be cement hoppers. Numerous Eastern railroads interchanged both trains and freight cars with the New Haven Railroad in this yard.

Lehigh & Hudson River Railway Baldwin (built 1944) 4-8-2 Mountain steam locomotive 11 leads a southbound manifest freight train past a tower protecting the New York, Ontario & Western Railroad diamond at Campbell Hall, New York, late 1940's. If you notice there is an over sized load on the flat car situated directly behind the tender. At the front end of this train are numerous gondolas and hopper cars along with a few boxcars. You may observe the engineer is looking ahead out of his cab window. To the right is the block signal that protects the diamond ahead by the tower.
