From the high desert to the forest

Just past the west switch of Mott siding, this Southern Pacific lumber drag is just about to start the descent into the Sacramento River Canyon. Only three miles as the crow flies from the depot in Dunsmuir, the westman is nine rail miles and nearly a half hour of travel time away from the crew change. June 13, 1985

A southbound CSX unit coal train (DEGX) grinds upgrade a Morley, TN on May 13, 1992 with SD40-2 No. 8442, SP GP60 No. 9730 and SP SD40-2r.. That SP SD40-2r doesn't surprise me, the SP GP60 does. I am sure a unit coal train isn't what San Francisco had in mind when they bought the speedster a couple years earlier.

Duplainville crossing

On the afternoon of July 29, 1997, a southbound Wisconsin & Southern freight, led by former Southern Pacific EMD GP20 No. 4118, is about to thunder over the diamond at Duplainville, Wisconsin. In the background on the Soo Line’s former Milwaukee Road double-track main line is Wisconsin Central train 47, waiting at the connection track signal to head north on the WC main after the WSOR train clears the plant.

Hershey is always a great location for a winter rest stop while driving I-80. Catching 10 trains in 90" was not unusual.
