In a city that never sleeps, the constant hustle and bustle of mundane, everyday life can lead to overworked, overwhelmed, and lackluster lives that are only momentarily interrupted by the occasional inevitable tragedy or accident. Had it not been in such close proximity to her own job, Lucy wouldn’t have had any inkling there was a fire consuming several floors of some random office space until the evening news story that night. Because it was nearby, however, many neighboring buildings were evacuated as a precaution. From behind the yellow tape that was haphazardly stretched across all major streets from as far as a couple blocks away, the redhead’s impatience to return to her projects greatly lessened as it became apparent how serious this actually was.
At some point she started to hear the rattling of a reporter rehearsing for on-the-scene updates and even one of her coworkers was asked to give a statement like she was involved beyond observation. While most inhabitants of the affected tower were safely filed out either by emergency personal or their own two feet, there was one person in particular who chose to go up instead of down. Up onto the roof, in fact, making it increasingly difficult for firefighters to safely reach him through the several burning floors between them. Maybe it was the smoke blocking his view or whatever else, but his footing slipped to the horror of onlookers.
What they didn’t expect was the bizarre, nature-defying and gentle lowering to the ground that followed, as if something large and hidden from the naked eye caught him and simply set him down. Lucy blinked, irises returning to their typical, glossy obsidian color, and she quickly folded her anxious hands behind her back. It hadn’t occurred to her at the time that most of her upper body was visible in the camera’s shot.
That was several weeks ago, but the clip had been analyzed by so-called local and international experts that it almost seemed a permanent fixture in the daily news. Luckily, no one seemed to notice the weird bystander with random hand motions off to the side, let alone connect her with the “occurrence” as they dubbed the fiasco.
At least, that’s what she thought anyway. Sipping on her tea, the alien tried not to get too worked up at a television mounted overhead.
