il est veuf car sa femme est morte dans un "accident de chasse", tuée par l'odieux roi Charles-Cinq-Et-Trois-Font-Huit-Et-Huit-Font-Seize de Takicardie, et élève seul ses quatre petiots

[insérer le clip youtube "dormez petits oiseaux" ici s'il vous plaît ^^] papa-poule, il endort ses oisillons avec une berceuse tous les soirs !! est-ce qu'il chante comme une casserole ? peut-être (ça les dérange pas, cela dit). est-ce qu'il les appelle ses "petites merveilles" et ses "petits oiseaux chéris", et puis enchaîne en traitant le roi de trouillard qu'a peur des perce-oreilles ?? OUI

sérieusement il a une répartie incroyable (les dialogues du film sont de Jacques Prévert, d'ailleurs !)

notre papa oiseau rencontre deux jeunes gens poursuivis par la police, il les connaît depuis dix minutes max, et il est immédiatement prêt à risquer sa vie pour eux

il es condamné aux travaux forcés et il en profite pour saboter la production

Il sait parler le toucan, l'anglais, le latin, le lièvre, le chinois, le perroquet et le lion

IL PARTICIPE À LA CHUTE D'UN RÉGIME AUTORITAIRE

Il a une classe et une gouaille inégalées, votez l'Oiseau (ou au moins allez voir le film...!)

C'est l'humain chez l'oiseau qui est fascinant !

Et nous vivons dans l’ignorance de ce qui unit,

de ce qui embrasse la vie générique d’un tout.

Et nous perdons la saveur des liens qu’on ne tisse pas.

L’origine de l’ange a sans doute à voir avec cette réplique.

A Giacomelli Feathursday

This #Feathursday we feature illustrations from French historian and author Jules Michelet’s The Bird (L’oiseau) with wood engravings by Hector Giacomelli. Originally published in 1856, our English language copy is translated from the eighth French edition, presented with all the original illustrations, and published by T. Nelson and Sons of London in 1868.

Giacomelli was born and raised in Paris, but an illness at the age of 30 forced him to leave the city and he began to draw and paint his new pastoral surroundings during his convalescence. He developed a working relationship with Gustav Doré and contributed ornamentation to Doré’s La Grande Bible de Tours, but Giacomelli remains best known for his illustration of birds.

This book was given as a gift to our department head Max Yela by former senior graduate intern and science editor, Sarah Finn (now Archival Projects Librarian at Milwaukee Public Library) in appreciation of her long employment at UWM Special Collections. In turn, Max donated the book to the collection in honor of Sarah’s many contributions to the department.
