A Giacomelli Feathursday

This #Feathursday we feature illustrations from French historian and author Jules Michelet’s The Bird (L’oiseau) with wood engravings by Hector Giacomelli. Originally published in 1856, our English language copy is translated from the eighth French edition, presented with all the original illustrations, and published by T. Nelson and Sons of London in 1868.

Giacomelli was born and raised in Paris, but an illness at the age of 30 forced him to leave the city and he began to draw and paint his new pastoral surroundings during his convalescence. He developed a working relationship with Gustav Doré and contributed ornamentation to Doré’s La Grande Bible de Tours, but Giacomelli remains best known for his illustration of birds.

This book was given as a gift to our department head Max Yela by former senior graduate intern and science editor, Sarah Finn (now Archival Projects Librarian at Milwaukee Public Library) in appreciation of her long employment at UWM Special Collections. In turn, Max donated the book to the collection in honor of Sarah’s many contributions to the department.

Un artista dallo stile inconfondibile. Ha affrontato temi come la terra e la natura, l'uomo nella sua condizione di vita in solitudine, la vecchiaia, la morte. Non cattura l'attimo ma crea spazi visivi.

Abilissimo nell'uso della camera oscura, arriva a creare forme dal contrasto elevato, fino a rendere quasi astratte le figure ritratte. Da questa caratteristica deriva una elevato controllo dell'attenzione dell'osservatore, che si sente spinto a seguire le linee guida, ad interpretare le sagome in senso quasi simbolico, come fossero i caratteri di scrittura.

Questo dettaglio non si deve trascurare: "A me interessano i segni che fa l’uomo senza saperlo, ma senza far morire la terra. Solo allora hanno un significato per me, diventano emozione. In fondo fotografare è come scrivere: il paesaggio è pieno di segni, di simboli, di ferite, di cose nascoste. È un linguaggio sconosciuto che si comincia a leggere, a conoscere nel momento in cui si comincia ad amarlo, a fotografarlo."
