Green Party Fundraiser Time! Rachel Fawcett comes to Button House, despite struggling with her feelings regarding a certain extremely unfortunate death there. Ghosts and the living alike are thrown into turmoil, especially when it begins to look like someone at the event may be attempting to harm the up-and-coming young politician. Can Julian stand idly by? Well, he's a ghost, so yeah, he has to.

This one pleasantly surprised me. As of my writing this post we're only two chapters in, but already this author has done a really nice charaterisation of Rachel? Despite only having a name to work with, she'd given her a really nice throughline that leads her to Button House. Similarly, Julian's mixed bag of emotions towards seeing his daughter is off to a great start. They reflect each other quite nicely - the past shapes the future and all that - and God if there isn't drama. I'd definitely take a look.

If the other dockworkers noticed that their young co-worker never hit puberty, they didn't say anything

If the man assessing him for the great war noticed the bandages around his chest, he didn't say anything

When William Havers noticed, he didn't say anything except for how much he loved his boyfriend

Once upon a time, The Captain was nameless

I had this one drafted for a little while and never got around to posting it! This is only one chapter strong so far, but I was intrigued by both the narration style and the setup. It's a fun little introduction to what could prove to be a compelling story.

His mother had assured him everything would be fine - after all, he’d packed everything he could possibly need. His uniform was clean and ironed, and they had ensured each piece was put in place perfectly. All together, he looked like a model scout. None of this made him feel any less nervous about the situation, though. ~~~ Theodore Hughes decided to join the scouts; It's funny how such a small choice could change his life. Patrick Butcher didn't get a choice which is, somehow, even funnier.

I haven't seen many new AUs in a while! Not one that departs completely from the show's canon, anyway. I think this universe does a really good job of translating the characters into something that feels natural, whilst not being a complete analogue for what their status was in the show. Cap and Pat's friendship is off to a fun, if rocky, start, and I'm liking the camping setting.

I’ve Got Termites in the Framework (So Do You) by lizardkid

Deathdays come and go. Each year brings with it new surprises, and occasionally, new friends, but one thing has remained unchanged for twenty-six years: Cap and Julian will never see eye-to-eye.

Or so they say.

If you like: -Back and forth bickering -Drama -Julian being Like That and saying things equal parts hilarious and exasperating Then you will probably like this fic. It's very well written and has some excellent dialogue.

Warning: Depicts mentions of cannibalism, racism, and abuse - all in line with the Ghosts' history, etc, but not necessarily fun to read.

This! This is a fun one. It's a very interesting - and fun! - look at the Ghosts' lives and what they left behind. It features some nice moments between the characters, and portrayals of Kitty, Alison, and Humphrey that particularly stand out to me as well done.

This work is a part of the Memento Mori fanfic series, which I've previously posted about on this blog here. Reading the other works in the series might give you a more informed read, but in my opinion it works as a standalone just as well. This is an original, and subtly dark, take on Fanny's life prior to haunting Button House as a ghost, and something of an origin story for how she came to be as she is. Doormouse is good for following through on character threads and details they lay out in previous works, and this is no exception. Fans of seeing the ghosts in their historical settings will enjoy this, though do note that its on the more tragic side of things.

When Mike's brother and his husband pay a visit to Button House, the Captain isn't sure what to make of it. After he runs away to think, the other ghosts get worried and beg Alison to have a chat with him.

Each of these are different and interesting takes on the ghosts coming out - both to themselves and each other. These range from the understanding to the bittersweet. But they're all connected with the same theme of acceptance - and Alison lending a helping hand!

Or the one where Alison realises that she views her students like her own family – and they’re beginning to return those feelings.

Warning: Instances of questionable parenting, violence, bullying of the ableist and homophobic kind, and some fat shaming. All instigators get their dues, though.

I have a special place in my heart for this SENCO AU! It's written so kindly and it just hits right - the characters are also excellently written. That and I do just love me some found family. Definitely recommend!
