One of the most important photographs I captured this past year. I took the time to properly compose this shot and include many elements that I love. This process took time to wait for just the right light and to get in the right position with my love. It was a dream realized to create this image as homage to Puerto Rico and everything I was fortunate enough to experience whilst there. That's why together we spell out the letters, P and R for, you guessed it, Puerto Rico.
Dear Puerto Rico, First, thank you. Thank you for allowing me to find out that what I knew about you was only a grain of sand compared to your beaches. Thank you for the compassion, the warmth, the rays of sunshine, the loco, the fog, the rain, the fireflies, the coco. The clean water, the many coral reefs, the cliffs to jump off, and the turtles that breached. Thank you for the stars, the moon, the bioluminescence. Thank you for the flavour, the adventure, the effervescence.
Thank you for the clean waves, the gift of surf, the astounding caves, and the soft turf. Thank you for the history that I learned about you. Thank you for the mystery that surrounds you. Thank you for often sharing a benevolent surprise. Thank you for giving me the gift of new eyes.
Thank you for the kindness and humour which your people showed. Thank you for also revealing that it's not an easy road. The United States still has a cold hand gripped firmly around the hot, beating heart of this land. We will see what these new changes bring as well as what is planned.
Regardless, I know one thing. I love you, Puerto Rico, in a certain kind of way. It's not easy to describe, but I'll try today.
You're the one I can come back to and you know what that means. I'll grab a Medalla and you'll warm my soul with some rice and beans.
You are eclectic and your culture is strong. I love the different music and all of the songs. The slang that you speak, however, was all new to me. The people that call you home are more than just pretty.
This is the ode to you, bonita. Much love from me, Puerto Rico.
