Watching Laagan always gives me goosebumps. A certain thrill and excitement runs through my veins when I see the narcissistic British losing against us. But there's a particular scene where I feel my heart break all over Elizabeth Russel (played by Rachel Shelley).
- Lagaan (transl. Agricultural tax) 2001.
That time when she turns to leave after watching Bhuvan (played by Aamir Khan) and his team's practice and confesses her love to Bhuvan who isn't not knowledgeable of the English language. He doesn't seem aware of the blooming love in her heart for him. She even acknowledges to herself that she shouldn't say it knowing she can never end up with him. Even though she burns inside with pain by seeing Bhuvan with his love, Gauri (played by Gracy Singh), she never uttered a single world about it.
From stealing glances of him every now and then to finally part with him without letting him know about her love, somehow we all can relate to her journey. Didn't we all love someone from afar whilst seeing them happy with someone else? Didn't our heart break when we couldn't convey our love to someone? Didn't we fall asleep knowing someone we love would never be ours?
In the film, Elizabeth couldn't express her love because of language barrier and I think that is a metaphor to how we all have some mental barriers because of which we can't express our love to them.
