Gram stain, 100x. Some sort of microorganism. Biochemical tests point to Neisseria meningitidis and/or some sort of Enterococcus but, if so, Where Are The Diplococci.

Here we're extracting piperine, the compund responsible for pepper's flavor, through continuous extraction using a Soxhlet extractor and methanol as solvent.

The invention of the Soxhlet extractor is attributed to the 1st century alchemist known as Maria Hebraea. The one in the image isn't so much a Soxhlet extractor as a Bain-Marie, but the principle is somewhat similar.
