Liveblogging working on my bioinformatics final project because otherwise I might explode.
What on Earth is a JSON file.
Ohhh, so it is some sort of unreadable horror. Okay, got it.
(Random microscope photo for size, etc.)

Love working with eukaryotes, tbh. You can observe sooo much stuff without having to take out The Oil. "Oh, just buy a block of silk paper" No <3

Rhodotorula sp., lactophenol cotton blue, 40x // Prototheca wickerhamii
Rhodotorula sp. is a fungus that only causes disease in exceptional cases, mostly associated with immunosuppression. It is known by its carotenoid pigment, which causes the colonies to have a red-pink color. You can find basidoconidia on the photo if you squint.
Prototheca wickerhamii is an algae!! As you might guess, infections by algae are known as algaeosis, and by this organism in particular, as protothecosis. That segmented, wheel-like structure near the center is called a theca, and is where this species got its name from.
man a LOT of people really underestimate how long microscopes have been around (the compound microscope was in use in the early 17th century) and for how long humans have known about bacteria (van Leeuwenhoek described unicellular organisms including bacteria mid-17th century)
i have read multiple posts and pieces of fiction that imply people would instantly connect microscopic organisms to disease, but it did take about 200 years between knowing about bacteria and experimentally connecting them to disease as a causative agent (germ theory was formalized late 19th century, although people were coming up with ideas about invisible-to-the-naked-eye contagions well before that). meanwhile rich people were looking at stuff under a microscope as a fun hobby for decades before germ theory. the issue is not convincing a regency era person that microbes exist. it's talking them down from how dare you say blorbo from my slides could hurt me???

Phialophora verrucosa. Lactophenol cotton blue, 40x and 100x respectively.
P. verrucosa is, along with Fonseca pedrozoi, one of the causes of chromoblastomycosis, a chronic subcutaneous disease characterized by wart-like plaques, particularly on the lower limbs.
Note the phialides (structures resembling a vase with flowers) in the second picture. They Are weird because the imprint for the stain was done with a bit too much force, but oh well.
Heaven forbid a protein gets a little creative these days!! #justprionthings
Sporothrix schenckii. Lactophenol cotton blue, 100x.
S. schenckii is the main cause of sporotrichosis, or rose-cutter's disease, a mycosis characterized by ascendant lesions that tend to stop at the main lymphatic nodule. It is considered an occupational disease because it mainly comes after inoculation with contaminated material, like thorns or wood.
