Throughout the film, the theme of apples is repeated. Martha shops for apples at the market and smells one, she sprouts apple seeds as a project and she reveals in her court testimony that her baby smelled like an apple when she got to hold her briefly. Fruit symbolise fertility, growth, nature and new life. Martha feels connected to her lost child through apples because of how the baby smelled. Another interesting note was that when they had lost their baby, for months afterwards they had dying plants in their house which emphasised the loss and feeling of infertility. Also, at the beginning of the film when we see a little girl smacking dandelions with a stick, her brutal action is actually going to result in more dandelions growing from seeds being despersed. Is there a plan or importance behind every sadness? This makes it all the more precious when she has a daughter at the end of the film who is climbing a giant apple tree and eating apples from its branches. Life continues and new fruits are grown and die to help the next generation. Its beautiful to think that everything has a reason and that even though her baby was only alive for a brief moment, she still had a lasting impact.
