When I meet people and they ask me what I do. I usually say “Nothing. I don’t believe in work.” And I don’t. They usually laugh and think I’m joking. But I’ve lived below the poverty line most of my life. And since I think that capitalism is the devil and ambition is a symptom of low self esteem, I’m okay with that. (Plus my religion states that to be meek and poor are signs of virtue and beauty. And I only want to be beautiful.)BUT on this Labor Day, in the midst of this apocalyptic pandemic; where my immune system is compromised and I am one of the most vulnerable . I am INCREDIBLY grateful to the working class, who deliver my groceries and at barely on a living wage make sure that all of our amenities and comforts have continued. Someone is waking up every morning and making sure I eat, get Internet, receive my medications, and can order cute underwear. And I don’t know what we all would do if they just said “No.” Thank You to the exhausted laborers who are suffering under someone’s thumb, who stress cry on their lunch break, and even though none of our economy is fair, sustainable, or even makes any sense, they still show up out of duty, or responsibility, or simply feeling like they have no other choice. I am in awe of you. Because I don’t have it in me. If it was up to me; I would have said “Fuck it!” A LONG time ago. In fact I did. I guess we are all lucky that my vote doesn’t count.
