GALA KNÖRR @galaknorr Project: Good Bad Not Evil These days the power of the digital image is so viral that is has ended defining our reactive multidimensional description of everyday life and how we receive information on current events from online media almost immediately. Digital images played a key role in two of the most earth-shattering political and social moments in twenty-first-century Western culture: the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States and the Brexit referendum to leave the European Union held in the United Kingdom. Italian Philosopher Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi (Bologna, 1948) reminded us that we are spending more and more time living in a digital reality, as electronic nomads whose souls are reflected online. By means of isolation and hyper-normalisation, that reality robs as the ability to create shared meanings that justify the existence of a collective consciousness or realm. Gala Knörr has investigated and analyzed those reactions to create a project —an installation with large-format paintings and a video— in which she shows the shared, collective response to real-life events based on viral images or post-Internet language and millennial symbols translated into the medium of art. The images we consume, create, edit and share to define aspects of our multi-realities have always had a dubious pedigree, but they are nevertheless part of the digital capitalist society’s heritage. Aside from the obvious, they also have speculative and relational connotations, such as the ability to trigger a sense of self-recognition, or mirroring, in users or viewers. For instance, the digital meme linguistically related to the French word même, used to refer to something that is the same or equal.
