I made a thing.. #Cortado #latteart #lacolombedc
I was in DC recently for a conference, which meant I needed to find a coffee shop to hang out in when I needed a break from shop talk. When this conference was at Dupont Circle, I would go to Filter every day, but now it's at the Convention Center.
Enter La Colombe.
It's tucked in an alley two blocks from the Convention Center and the requisite hotels. It was close enough to get a cup quickly between meetings, but off the beaten path enough that I didn't run into everybody I was avoiding.
This review of a trip I took there on a Sunday night after a day of workshops and meetings. I planned on meeting my friend Anna there, but she was held up my single-tracking on WMATA. (Which is par for the course.)
I got a Guatemala pour over to kill time before Anna showed up. It was good but not great. Bright, fruity flavors but not too acidic. It was a very smooth cup and pleasant to drink. It just didn't make me stop and think, "Whoa! What a cup of coffee!" It was more of a, "Not bad." While a drank my coffee I tried to read about the Barcelona vs. Atleti match from earlier in the day, but I was distracted by cold glares from a guy at the next table. He was having a weird argument with his girlfriend but for some reason kept looking at me every time he tried to put her down for having emotion. I wanted to tell him they weren't that interesting, but I opted for headphones instead. When Anna finally got there, she got an espresso. She said it was good.
During the rest of the week it was full of people working on their laptops or reading. The whole shop is super open with a wall of windows, it's a very pleasant atmosphere. It's a good example of a third wave roaster and shop for sure. Would I got back? Probably, but I don't think I'd go out of my way for it. It's a good place to meet people though. I will see them next year when I return to that conference again.
Shop: La Colombe, Washington DC. Drink: Guatemala, pour over, black Companion: Anna (espresso)
