Will the real Lady Dusk please stand up?
Thank you to everyone for being super patient with my absence in game and discord. Thank you all for excitingly letting me know that the benchmark was here and encouraging me to make Dusk bunny. I am blessed with amazing people in my life. Thank you. I hope to be back sooner than later.
The calm before the storm will be short-lived. She’s ready. “Be careful what you wish for..”
Is there seriously not a Fandom for The Superlatives on this site? I need some sick fan art of Lady Dusk and Miss Jane Willow in my life
A Key to Victory
Frost sat in the silence of his apartment with a plain wooden box across his lap. It drew an odd jealous look from his cat who would have rather been in its place, making the Elezen’s legs fall asleep, instead of waiting on one of the couch cushions for his turn. Something about it was more important than his comfort, though Survival Rations’ opinion on the matter would have differed. The box, flipped open, contained a single, fulm long, milky white rod of refined crystal the likes of which, moons ago, had been far out of his reach. A chance meeting with another “monster” saw it to his hands. It felt all too easy to be real, and he’d done nothing to earn such a powerful gift. He hadn’t even officially won the game Lady Dusk brought him into, his opponent chose to forfeit by cutting himself on Frost’s knife willingly, for reasons he may never have understood. Nonetheless, this white auracite would be enough to contain the aether of seven Void Mages, by her description. For all her claims and generosity, Frost felt compelled to have the piece appraised by someone who could confirm whether or not it was genuine, or a very eye-pleasing fake. His first idea was to send it to Mother for analysis. If it proved real, maybe it would give her some hope for a resolution to their ongoing problems. She was crying the other night. 168′s words rang again in his ears. He knew Lillium had been, but who wouldn’t if they had to perform an autopsy on the corpse of one of their children? The woman had nearly 300 of them, all of the Subjects in the project she called her own, no matter that most weren’t even of her race or tribe. She wasn’t their birth-giver, but a rebirth-giver, and she loved them all for the strength she gave them and the dedication they gifted her in return. And she had lost many over the years, but to her heart, it must have felt like she’d lost 201 over and over again. She lost him the first time to Sas Theius when she wasn’t looking, saw the destruction of one body happen before her eyes, and then examined another shed husk, and still didn’t have him returned to her and whole. It always burned the back of Frost’s throat whenever he knew Mother had been crying for any of them, try as she might not to let them see it. The woman was made of iron, but even iron had to bend sometimes. And if he had no choice but to use the auracite to stop 305 once and for all, how would she respond then? Relief? Would she hate him for it knowing the essence of one of her children was trapped and unable to return to the lifestream? And if it didn’t work and 305 ended up killing him, his sacrifice will have been in vain. Aimee saved 305. The bitterness of her betrayal still sat like a rock in his chest. But now 168, too, seemed to prefer the possibility of separating him from Theius and seeing him returned to Mother rather than destroyed, if only so she wouldn’t have to cry again. And Frost wanted to believe such a favorable - fanciful - ending could happen. It was a far stretch which had both the boy and the beast grappling for absolutes versus a thin shred of abstract hope. He carefully returned the auracite to the box and closed it. He couldn’t ask Lillium to inspect something which could mean an ending beyond death for any of her children. He couldn’t make her cry again. Putting the auracite in her hands knowing this would have been beyond cruel, even for himself, and with luck she would never even know he had it. Pray we never have to use it, he told 168 at the end of their spar. Even monsters had to have limits to the depth of their cruelty.
