Diana’s still not back the day after that, either. It’s not an uncommon experience, for her to be away longer than expected (especially on Justice League stuff), but the apartment still feels too big and quiet, without her around (and even with Claire hanging around), the bed too cold and empty.

Claire very gently bullies him into making her coffee Cuban-style, tutoring him through the whole process and proclaiming the result to be acceptable, coming from a white guy.

“Thanks,” he says, dry as a desert.

“Just accept the compliment,” says Claire, bumping his shoulder. “When do you think she’s coming back?”

“Maybe today,” says Steve, hopeful despite the worry wearing away at his heart, drumming his fingers on the book he’s working through. “This weekend at the latest.”

Claire watches him for a long moment, sipping at her coffee. Then she says, “You miss her.”

Like it’s instinct. Like even when he can’t remember her, some shadow of a memory is still there, some ghost of a kiss. “Yes,” he says, thinking of almost. “She’ll come back,” he adds. “She always does.”

Days of Awe: Wanda very nearly forgets it entirely. It’s mid-September, and autumn in New York feels unseasonably warm compared to what she knows. But there it is, in tidy sans-serif text on the calendar that Rhodey had tacked up in the kitchen.

Celluloid Jam: “Figures. We made it through those other team-ups without any significant injuries; something bad was bound to happen.”

eyes as clear as centuries: Han’s only thought when Leia directs them to Yavin 4 is disbelief—both that this woman who just withstood torture on the matter reveals her army’s base so readily to him, and that she’s taking them there despite her own admission that the Empire had probably let them leave the Death Star intentionally.

Every Part a Flame: Even four months into his deployment, nothing could have prepared Bucky Barnes for Nazis armed with enormous ray guns that can eliminate a man where he stands, leaving nothing but fading blue smoke behind.

Bang: “Quit staring at my ass.”

Whiz: Steve unlocks the door to his apartment, balancing the paper bag of groceries on his hip before turning the knob. When he enters, it’s only his unnaturally quick reflexes that keep him from losing an ear.

Thump: They’re barely over the threshold of her hotel room before his tongue is halfway down her throat and his hand is snaking up her back underneath her shirt. Most of Natasha’s first times—especially the one-night stands—tend to be sloppy but sufficient, but Barnes handles her the way she’s seen him handle his guns: smoothly, precisely, elegantly, exactly the way the maker intended.

Click: “We already knew you’ve met Nat before,” Steve points out. “You shot her by L’Enfant Plaza.”

Pow!: “Red—next time this happens,” Bucky groans over the racket, running hard with his astrorifle in one hand and Natasha’s hand in the other. “I reckon I just make it Cactoid Steve’s problem. I did not enlist in the Marshal Academy for this here kinda mess.”

Indelible: A lot of the Resistance guys have tattoos, actually. 

Conclusion: Whoever told me to write fiction in media res apparently left a heck on an impression on me. But I like that element of my work; I think most of these actually do convey a good deal of information about setting and context while letting the story get going and not wasting time on exposition. Which is the point of starting a story that way!
