Snowflake Challenge Day 9
In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) but you ended up loving.
You can read my other challenges here: Day 1 Day 3 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Day 8
Haha, on to day 9 (after a failure of a day 8). Only 6 more days (I think... I hope, please). Okay, okay, okay. Day 9 -- random recs; I can do that. Let's hit all three criteria 1. Not in my fandom
sealed by a fragile touch by vixys “He’s not leaving Bones behind on some godforsaken desert planet with nothing but the dead for company.” Time moves on, wherever you are, but the question is, how fast? Kirk/Bones.
I honestly don't know how I got here... probably due to my love of Karl Urban and the new Star Trek. I don't think it'll be news to anyone that Star Trek (and even Kirk/Bones) isn't really my thing, but I'm willing to give everything a try. And I'm glad I did. Anyways the story was really interesting -- I'm a sick fan of psychological trauma and angst. SO SUE ME.
2. Pushed against my boundaries
Favour by ladyjohnlock (Rated M, 1 980 words) For the prompt Jimmy and Alfred taking turns on fucking Thomas. Everything consensual. And by "consensual", I think she means dubiously so, so be forewarned. I think it goes without saying why this would push against my boundaries, as the idea is pretty sick and gross. On top of that, it's not even my ship (even if it's a perverse version of it). But then like I said above I'm willing to try everything once, so I read it and ended up enjoying it if only to say MY POOR THOMAS LOOK AT HOW TERRIBLE JIMMY IS YOU SHOULD FORGET ABOUT HIM AND PUT POISON IN HIS TEA. *cough* sorry, sorry. I'll contain myself. 3. Thought I wouldn't be interested
Perdition by sunsetmog (Rated M, 24 826 words) Thomas is manipulative, ambitious, and ruthless. He's also lonely as hell. And then the new gardener starts at Downton, and everything changes. (a slightly alternate look at season three, or: Thomas might be mean but he also needs a hug)
There's only really one reason why I avoided this fic at first and that's because I'm not that overly fond of OMC/OFCs who are romantic leads (if you will). I think it's partly due to the fact that my first encounter with them was a Mary Sue/Gary Stu version. But that is not at all the case with this story. I mean, just read the summary. It sounds great, doesn't? (wow, I've gotten really lazy with my recs) It's exactly what I typically look for in a fic -- and the OMC is written really well. This author understands Thomas at his nastiest and most insecure, and he/she is able to convincingly bring him on a journey where the destination is to a little more trusting Thomas.
