Since the death of #ladylucan last Saturday unscrupulous people with little to no relationship with Veronica, the late Dowager Countess, have given interviews & sold scurrilous stories claiming she’d recently found love at 80, was morbidly obsessed with the past & “bitter” about the estrangement from her beloved children. All utter rot! My precious, sweet funny kind-hearted friend was far from “stuck in the past” Veronica was a vibrant active women as at home at @Grouchos as she was in my StJames private member’s Club overlooking Green Park where she walked everyday to watch the feeding of the precious Pelicans at 2.30; all of whom she knew by name! Recently she had been excited to watch me walking in @londonfashionweek but she had a temperature. If I could use one word to describe Veronica it would be #Eccentric- for she cut a line of her own in everything she did. Determined, mischievous & stubborn, she was also girlish, curious, self-effacing; & a kind woman who took great pleasure in life. Furthermore she not only adored her children but yearned for a rapprochement. The notion that she was eaten away by bitterness is sensationalist tommy-rot! I’d known Veronica over twenty-years & the last few years I’ve spent a great deal of time writing her biography. For far from feeling bitter about her estrangement from her 3 children Veronica never stopped loving them & longed for a rapprochement. My dear friend the feminist feisty #LadyLucan - (a title she never used) had a razor sharp mind, was fulling engaged in the moment & devoted to her causes. Her dearest cause was the preservation of swans - for like myself & #NancyMitford Veronica adored “poultry of all persuasions!” (at Royal Over-Seas League)
