official-data replied to your post “ok so i have a question humans (for the most part) speak basic,...”
I usually just assume it's a translation convention. I.e., the "real" name in Basic isn't "X-wing", but it uses the name of something that's X-shaped. Like, maybe it's more literally something like "cross-wing", but it's "translated" to X-wing. Likewise, C-3PO is probably "really" Cresh-[Basic for three]-peth-osk, but it's translated to C-3PO (the same way that a Spanish speaker, say, would read a catalog number differently than an English speaker, "cee" vs "ce", etc)
also @ladyvader1005 (but i can’t figure out how to reply to multiple, uh, replies):
They do use our alphabet along with aurebesh, they call it High Galactic alphabet. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/High_Galactic_alphabet “Well, actually, they do use the Roman alphabet in the Star Wars universe."― Pablo Hidalgo.
i did not realise high galactic was a thing! i feel like i saw a tweet the other day from pablo talking about numerals in the sw style guide- roman for planets, arabic for moons, too. wondered how it all fitted together. like that, apparently.
thank you for easing my mind on this tiny thing that bothered me a remarkable amount, i genuinely appreciate it! <3
