I was just curious if you know anything about the relationship between Laurens and Lafayette? Forgive me if this has already been asked.

I honestly can’t tell you a whole lot about the Laurens/Lafayette relationship.  Here is how Chernow describes their relationship in his Hamilton bio:

“The gay trio to which Hamilton and Laurens belonged was made complete by Lafayette,” Hamilton’s grandson later wrote.  “On the whole, there was something about them rather suggestive of the three famous heroes of Dumas.”  Lafayette always spoke of his two American friends in the most affectionate terms.  Of Laurens he wrote that “his openness, integrity, patriotism, and splendid gallantry have made me his devoted friend.”

We also have this quote about Lafayette remembering Hamilton and Laurens (from “The Middle Templar at Washington’s Side” by Eric Stockdale):

At the outset of the Franco-American assault on Yorktown, Laurens was back at Washington’s side as one of his five aides, but the general allowed him to go and command a battalion in Lafayette’s light infantry division, in which Alexander Hamilton commanded another. On 14 October 1781, Laurens and Hamilton jointly attacked the pivotal Redoubt No. 10, next to the mouth of the York River, and succeeded in taking it. This stronghold was later known as the Rock Redoubt and a triumphal arch was erected on it years later for a visit by Lafayette. America’s gallant French friend then made a point of paying tribute to the part his light infantry had played in the battle, and referred by name to his two officers, Hamilton and Laurens.

Since Laurens and Lafayette (and Hamilton) were both young men who were excited to fight in the war to earn glory and win freedom for America, it seems that they got along well.  Laurens, Lafayette, and Hamilton were also all fluent in French, which probably made communication easier.

This got very long so I’m putting it under a cut!

A - What do you write?  Fanfiction, original fiction, nonfiction, articles, songs, poems, essays, plays, what?I’ve done a little of everything listed in the question! Emotionally the most important to me is plays and scripts, because I feel I have a skill there that really shines and I actually enjoy editing them; I’m a dab hand at prose, too, but I often can’t deliver on it in a satisfying way at length and I get fatigued with it very easily. Poetry. .. I have a complex relationship with. It’s easier to show off to people irl than pretty much anything else, so I keep one of my poems memorized for the sake of “yes, I really am a writer, i promise” conversations.B - How often do you write?Rarely and intermittently. I don’t subscribe to the idea of inspiration striking, I guess - it’s more like, writing is very much dependent on my overall wellness.  Conclusion: I’m kind of an unstable fuck with poor ‘writing hygiene.’C - Who is your favorite character of your own?  Who is your favorite character created by somebody else?  Why?My favorite character of my own that I’ve ever written is, uh?? This is difficult. I think I’ll pick one that I’m totally satisfied with as-written more than a ‘favored darling.’ I think it’d be this minor character, Jerry, in this unpolished short story I did called Matchbook Scripture. He did exactly what he was needed for in his scenes and you could really feel the viewpoint character’s wariness and confusion toward him. Anyway, he’s kind of an ass, because he runs up on this kid who’s running away from home and drives him to the county line to drop him off with nary a word exchanged. Someone reading the story came up with a delightful interpretation that he was trying to do a “ha, this’ll learn you” kind of thing and as a writer, I was very happy because he, you know, got people forming opinions. He’s just.. very much a short story character and it works. He did his narrative job completely. You go, Jackass Jerry.My favorite character created by someone else changes a lot. Since these are writing questions, I’m predisposed to think of prose characters... I love Mike the HOLMES IV from The Moon is a Harsh Mistress a lot. I read the book very young and a lot of what’s done with that character are things I love in other characters a lot. I still think about the scene where Mike’s like “so, I have a visual reference for the word orgasm now because I saved the footage of those giant rocks we launched hitting earth” and the protagonist is like “fuckiNG WOAH THERE BUDDY”. It’s a good scene. the sentient overlord computer isn’t evil, but very personally biased to his friends. he plays practical jokes and one of the opening scenes is the protagonist asking him to run all the joke ideas by him in the future, so that nobody ends up dead or something. anyway he’s a very good character but i would personally recommend never getting invested in robert heinlein’s writing

D - If you had the choice of going without writing forever or going without dinner forever, which one would you choose?

Uh. Bye, dinner. I never eat three meals a day anyway. I’ve already effectively abolished the triad meal system in my life years ago.

E - Have you ever participated in National Novel Writing Month or any of its variations?

God. Yes. I was seventeen and I actually managed to do it. It was a first-person fantasy setting. The setting felt very not-researched-1700s. It was, roundaboutly, about a king who used a demigod’s crush on him to attain immortality, except the story was all as told centuries later by an unwitting artificial human the demigod made, in a convoluted bid to get revenge on the king. It was important for my confidence, important for my writing, and I guess I still do want to rewrite it someday.
