What happens in the waiting changes everything. . . The boys sat on the dock and asked "so we just sit here and wait for a fish to bite? What if no fish bite? What if we don't catch anything?". . . In the waiting they laughed, they had conversations with their Grandpa and watched their dad take his shirt off, catch his breath while listening to country music on a dock in a small valley we fell in love with. We waited for rest like this, peace like this, reprieve like this, and to do family like this. The waiting has changed all of us in ways we couldn't have imagined. . . Waiting cultivates a discipline of hope. Set the hook, place the bait, throw the line, and wait for a bite. The winds blows slightly and reveals a change in strategy, reel the line in, change directions, and cast again. Wait again...and again. No bites. . . I'm not a fisherman. I am a fisherman's daughter. I watched my dad teach our boys what to look for, the strategy of fishing, what to do when you catch a tree and remind them you can do everything right and still not a single fish bites. . . Your posture in the waiting trains your presence and perspective when hope is no longer delayed. The birth of the dream unfolding, the business adventure, the marriage restored, the baby you longed for, the adoption finalized, the home purchased, the healing that was deemed impossible, you fill in the __________. . . We have learned how to wait and yet I find there is always more to learn. We haven't got this waiting thing perfected. I'm patiently impatient. Four hours later, a little sun burnt, filled with kombucha and fresh berries, my dad cut the hooks and dropped the worms into the water. All of a sudden the silence of waiting was broken as a fish took the bait, no strings attached. Smart fishy. . . Laughter erupted on that dock. The kids filled with eager hearts to fish and wait again. Sometimes catching nothing is absolutely everything.
