i don’t hate the anime. it was a super important part of my childhood. that being said, revisiting it as an adult is kind of painful. it has not aged well in many respects - poisoned by homophobia, rape jokes, sexualization of minors, and a deeply mean-spirited tone. it is difficult to reconcile with the series as it exists today - or even the series as it existed back then.

it is so late and i am so wasted so take what i say with a grain of salt but hear me out for a second. throwing my hat in the ring when it comes to the portrayal of sa in epic

i think ‘odysseus’ (the song) would be so much more narratively powerful if odysseus’ status as a survivor of sexual assault in the original myth wasn’t left ambiguous / glossed over as it was in the adaptation. i genuinely love epic’s version of calypso as a character but i feel like the rest of the musical suffers from the decisions they made when characterizing her as far more innocent. especially in regards to how the ithaca saga handles the subject - i think odysseus slaughtering the suitors for planning to rape his wife just comes across as much more poignant and lessens a lot of the weird sexist/fridgey implications if you read him as a survivor of rape himself.

onto that note, i do understand why they chose to redirect the subject of the suitors’ forceful sexual advances from the servants to penelope, certainly. i don’t think that change in itself is particularly objectionable on its own. what i don’t understand is why the assault odysseus faces is erased (due to being ‘too uncomfortable’ to adapt) whereas the assault penelope faces pulls no punches in terms of how explicit it is. why the double standard? it makes no sense.

yeah i do think the themes of sexual assault in the ithaca saga could’ve been handled a bit better. but it also had a song about a sa survivor hunting down a terrified group of attempted rapists for sport which is fucking awesome

as someone with plenty of kinks myself i kind of hate it when people act as if all kinks are created equal and/or exempt from criticism on the basis of being fantasy. like the sexualization of what incest survivors go through does affect the way we are treated and the way our trauma is treated In Real Life - having the worst experience of your life synonymous with a fetish before people even deign to consider it abuse in the first place (which it is! inherently!) materially effects me and it sucks, actually.
