Happy birthday, Peter Shelton! Today we celebrate our friend,neighbor, and the extensive, fascinating body of work that has been gifted to us through him. Shelton’s artistic career holds a rich exhibition history including solo shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art and LACMA, an impressive array of awards such as the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant and the John S. Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, and his work is held in the collections of MoMA, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Getty Museum, among many others. Though his oeuvre is constituted by highly varied projects, one distinctive Sheltonian thread running throughout is the accomplishment of embodiment achieved not through direct figuration or specific representation but through relation. In Shelton’s work we see while we are simultaneously seen, as our awareness of our own being in relation to these objects is heightened. “To me, the whole point of sculpture, most of the time, is that it creates something that is alive in a kind of improbable way. Sculpture is a thing you bump into, that you relate to with your body.
