@Silvia De Angelis

❛ We need to be really bothered once in a while. How long is it since you were really bothered? About something important, about something real? ❜
a groan almost coursed through in disruption to her controlled breathing . a huff . a titter . she nearly tittered . the jagged curves her brow had just welcomed as part of her narrowed looks would suffice , it accompanied the tightness her own lips showcased whilst pressing up against one another . it was either take everything as a joke or stress over it — but , in maria’s case , she excelled at both . the reapable how long? sent politeness trudging and opting out of the conversation . ‘ ’s not like i’m one to stress over being out of cocoa puffs six a.m. in the morning when i’d just woken up with a craving for it . ’ she found it self-evident , her worry , her rugged sleep habit below her eye sockets . perhaps it didn’t read through , she couldn’t really see clarice either . ‘ i am bothered by something real every - fucking - day , starling . don’t go pulling this crap on me . ’ head went askew , stopped at a halt by her middle and index fingers meeting her temple , elbow pointedly rested on the table’s surface . ‘ ‘s there a goal to this derring-do of yours ? ’

Nothing lasts forever: we know this.
yes, yes, she knows. how could she not? the woman who got pulled down from the mountain is not the same woman sitting so precariously close, capturing the sunspots in clarice’s eyes like she’s done so many times before now. the tone is slightly dour but sadie, ever prepared with an opposing point of view, lets a husky laugh ramble from her lips, grating like sandpaper from her throat. ❝ you make it sound so sad. ❞ maybe it is, in a way. she’s seen what it’s like, WATCHING THE OLD WAYS DIE RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER. it isn’t pleasant, but neither is living. for a woman so confident she still doesn’t quite understand that feeling, what runs through her blood now.
she leans closer again to sap the woman’s warmth, tone of voice lowered so it’s just a present shared between them by the light of the candle. ❝ of course it ain’t gonna’ last forever. ❞ were she a younger woman she would’ve hated saying that. BUT SHE ISN’T ANYMORE. she aged quickly when the old fire of her life got snuffed out. ❝ doesn’t mean it ain’t worth it. doesn’t mean it ain’t real. ❞ they’ve been around one another long enough for sadie to understand. but she’s seen how clarice’s steely expression softens, the way hers does, when they’re close.
❝ i don’t need it to last forever. ❞ the strange admission of a changed woman. THIS IS HOW SHE MOVES ON; an unsteady hand crosses clarice’s jaw and, after a prayer in her mind, she takes the woman’s lips against her own. nothing too much. not too little. a reassurance, an affirmation of what she knows has been lingering there in their minds. when she breaks that grin of her slowly rears its head, ready to be challenged. ❝ i’ll be around as long as you’ll have me. s’what i said before, ain’t it? ❞
RICHARD SIKEN / WAR OF THE FOXES !
as her hips shift, the wood beneath her presses down into the floorboard with a gentle squeaking noise that echoes in an empty room. empty, bar three people, and the others left behind unconscious from the drink. valentine is usually slow at night, WHEN THE WORK DIES. sadie prefers it this way, as the galaxy above carves a path clear across the night sky and the INSECTS BEGIN TO TAKE OVER. as the barman cleans his station with a wet rag she takes her usual position in the chair, legs straight and leaned back, only breaking from her drink to watch the woman seated at her right. ❝ you got a bright pair of eyes, ❞ half observation, half compliment. the odd way its phrased makes her laugh.
while they sit together, sadie adjusts the long braid that curls along her shoulder. ❝ i’ve been thinkin’ about something. ❞ they’ve already discussed so much; their pasts, their victories and defeats. an idea, bubbling up over the last couple of weeks. the things they’ve done, what they’ve seen together sticks on her mind. ❝ this business is hard enough for who we are. the way we’ve gotten along the last few weeks, the way we work together, ❞ she pauses, clearly trying to fish for the right words. ❝ well, uh. i’ve been lookin’ for a partner. someone i know won’t do me wrong or treat me unfair. ❞ normally she would demand, but keeping clarice’s gaze makes it difficult. ❝ was hopin’ you’d want to join me. ride with me, long-term. ❞ that toothy grin appears again. ❝ any complaints? ❞
