Do you think that Carisi would've had any particular reaction to Barba if he'd been around for 'October Surprise'? I rewatched it recently and I couldn't help but wonder if Carisi would be supportive or disappointed with him.
I sort of touched on this in my (enormous) 17x23 episode tag, Hiding Places (I’m linking to Chapter 3 in particular, which includes a long conversation in which Barba tells Sonny all about October Surprise, all about his childhood and the mistakes he feels he made in handling that case).
In that story, I had a tender Sonny (affected by Mike’s death plus the death threats against Barba), saying, “What matters is, you did the right thing in the end.” Namely, a Sonny who (after the fact) chose to ignore Barba’s moment of weakness and focus on the end result, which was that Barba was convinced of his friend’s guilt and tried to move with pressing charges.
But what you’re asking is what would Sonny have done at the time. Which is a great question. I feel that, unlike Amaro (who was always combative and didn’t seem to like Barba), Sonny would be in denial at first. Carisi the newbie would probably think Barba had his reasons, or that he was working an angle. Not that he was plain compromised because of his emotions.
I think Sonny would figure it out eventually, and maybe he’d understand. He’d display that empathy, in its earlier, S16 raw form. Maybe he’d try to approach Barba, gently, to explain that he understands, but that Barba should reconsider. And then Barba would be like “shut up, Carisi, what do you know?” (which he didn’t have the guts to tell Amaro, because Amaro saw right through his ass in that case). Basically, Sonny would try to see this from Barba’s perspective (like he always does) and he’d try to a) understand and b) change Barba’s mind (to little effect).
I don’t think Sonny would be disappointed, because he’s not one to judge, and he does seem to understand Barba’s actions better than the other cops (as a lawyer), so I feel he would try to see Barba as a person, not his idol on a pedestal. In this case, of course, we’re not talking about lawyers vs. cops (not explicitly), but we are talking about a lawyer (Barba) who wanted to shield a friend of his from the cops. At least at first. So, in that conflict, I feel Sonny would likely side with the lawyer (as he usually does), and maybe he’d even appreciate the political implications, something Amaro didn’t care about at all.
I also think Sonny might be intrigued by Barba’s actions on a purely personal level. He’d find it fascinating to see “ADA Barba” acting on emotion. Sonny would probably want to know more about Barba’s early life, but of course he’d never ask.
And a final note; this answer would change if Sonny was no longer a newbie. A more confident, established Sonny (a S17 Sonny) might actually reach out to Barba and try to chide him for real. Guilt him into doing the right thing, maybe. Say ‘I expected better from you, counselor.’ To which Barba would maybe reply with a long sigh and a throwaway line, something like, ‘Never expect ‘better’ from a lawyer, Carisi.’
And then Sonny would say, ‘You’re not acting like a lawyer, you’re acting like a friend’ and Barba would be like, ‘I’m not a very good friend, as I’m sure Alex would tell you,’ and then Sonny would dare to ask for more, and they’d have a long conversation which would require a full fic so I’ll stop now.
