Novella - Land Gone
A song that keeps you in suspense of what’s to come is usually fun. Intros give few clues, instrumentation is vague, nary a vocal to be found - suspense in a song can build anticipation that really pays off in the end. Unfortunately, Novella’s “Land Gone” builds great suspense that ultimately doesn’t go much of anywhere.
The first minute of “Land Gone” is truly intriguing. Guitars flutter with a variety of phasing effects and delay over a driving drum and bass beat. As the intro gets longer, you can’t help but wonder where it’s going, because it feels like it could pop at any moment. When Novella’s vocalists join the song a minute in though, their vocals are drab to say the least. It seems like they’re going for a ‘70s psychedelic effect, but can’t quite get the song off the ground.
The band’s dual female vocals really just do not work here. The song’s verses are so monotone, they border on maddening. The energy and emotion the vocalists show does improve in the song’s chorus, but it’s only momentary; a few shouts of “Land Gone,” and we’re back to more numbing chants.
While it’s certainly no easy feat for a band to be strictly instrumental, “Land Gone” may have provided Novella an opportunity to give it a shot. When the vocals exit after the song’s first verse, the momentum picks back up. I couldn’t help but think back to the beginning of the song, where I sort of hoped that the mesmerizing guitar effects would comprise the entire song. Later, the strings and percussion crank out an adventurous outro that consists primarily of a surfy guitar solo that serves as the song’s lone thematic departure, and while perhaps a bit too extreme a deviation, it’ll at least wake listeners up.
