Today is the first day of fall. I guess this picture is a #flashbackfriday ...these fall plant displays were found on my trip to Chicago a few years back. One of my favourite things about Chicago was that nearly every commercial building in the core had a display like this, and city sidewalks and boulevards were the same...some with very playful combinations and interesting sculptural accents. These "harvest monsters" line the entrance to this corporate tower. Their legs were made of janky, rusted metal and their bodies featured a bounty of fall features - ornamental cabbage, chili peppers, squashes and gourds, ivy. I really loved this display. Spring and summer have plenty of inspirational themes to play off of for seasonal interest in the landscape. But fall, for me, has the harvest season, the changing leaves, warm colour palettes and, of course Hallowe'en. Have some fun with those when designing your fall display this season.
