Celebrating the return of a Lancaster bomber (Avro Lancaster Mk.Ic; serial number R5868; tail number PO-S) named 'S for Sugar' from No. 467 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) at RAF Waddington from its 100th combat sortie.
The 100th sortie took place on the night of 11/12 May 1944, to bomb targets in Belgium.
This aircraft is the oldest Lancaster that has survived to this day. It was laid down at the factory as the Avro Manchester, but was completed as a Lancaster. In service since June 1942, it was initially part of No. 83 Squadron RAF and had its own name "Q-Queenie".
This aircraft was the first heavy bomber of the Royal Air Force to make 100 combat sorties, and during the war it made a total of 137 combat sorties. The same aircraft in another photo . May 1944
