Am I the only one who never really had a proper plan to study languages. Everybody else seems to be so organized. I just do what I feel like doing at the moment. Probably the reason of my failure to master Dangme after 15 years.
So maybe I should try this planning thing.
So I have a few challenges:
I work 7:30am-4:30pm. I do technically have a one hour lunch break which I often ignore and just munch something at the desk. But I could technically squeeze in a short lunch break study.
I have small kids so after work I need to spend time with them. Finding way to maybe study the language with them could be the key here. Something fun for everybody. Maybe I could try and craft some memory card games with them or something.
I have very bad internet connection lot of the time so I can’t really rely on online resources. Not that there is a ton of them anyway…
Saturdays are my best study time. Mostly I can do 1-2h on saturdays. Sometime even the whole day if we don’t have any other things planned. We do try to go swimming or walking but that’s about it. I also have to do lesson planning for Sunday school Saturday’s.
Half of my Sunday and occasionally even the whole Sunday goes to church. Then my kids have Fante lesson in the evening with a tutor. I hang around but I’m not really participating. I probably should but I am so much more motivated to learn Dangme. I just can’t be arsed with Fante.
So for now the best I can do is to have my studying done during saturdays and during the week I go through Anki on my phone when ever I can. If internet gods are on my side maybe I can watch some videos.
Right now I just want to finish with the dictionary project I have started. I want to create a glossary of useful words for me. I’m going through the whole 3000+ entries dictionary and I type the useful words to a spread sheet with example phrases. When I’m done with this I will have a handy little dictionary with a search function. Yeah, no Google translate or AI translations available to Dangme I’m afraid. So anyway, when my little dictionary project is done I can start translating Childrens stories and hopefully that will help me to pick up some vocabulary organically. I really hate the flash card method. So damn boring. Effective maybe but boring.
And then I will try to make some games to learn with my kids.
So yeah. That is my plan for now. Trying to keep at it this time. No more quitting!
