Using AI to make lesson notes more interesting.

I'm using a wonderful book called Let's learn Twi MA YENSUA TWI to learn Akuapem Twi. I tried how AI could help me make my lesson notes more interesting. It was kinda fun.

I think it looks nice. Though hand drawn commic might still be better for drilling the words in your head. The more you interact with the material the better.

“There aren’t enough hours in a day.” There are actually. The problem is that we think 40 hour work weeks are an unavoidable fact of life.

The problem is that everyone has to work 8 hours, pretty much no exceptions, and with getting ready time + (unpaid) lunch + commute, “8 hours” is actually anywhere between 9 and 12, every single day, with more work to do when you get home because our society and culture was built around having one member of the household home full time and nothing has changed now that almost everyone works.

No wonder Americans are reliant on DoorDash and fast food, there’s no time or energy to cook. No one wonder mental and physical health are in shambles, many just spent all day sitting in fluorescent lights with little to no stimulation. “Just wake up earlier” “Just meal prep”… these are ok short-term, individual solutions, but the broader, systemic issue is obvious. We aren’t built for this. There’s no work-life balance. Genuinely, I think if our culture could normalize a shorter work week, many individuals’ biggest problems would simply evaporate.

I'm having 40 hour working week but being pressured to make it 55 hours. (7 days work week) Tried it and my mental health was in ruins. Refused to go to work during weekends after that. Needless to say they are not happy about this. (Location: Ghana. Government trying to implement 24/7 economy and I hate it.)

briefly pursuing a career in animation radicalized me on this. So many stories from the industry about how you have to start with your character design as dark as possible, because INEVITABLY you'll get "notes" from higher-ups asking you to make them lighter.

In a class about making a pitch bible my teacher once role-played as a shitty executive with a classmate, pressing them in intentionally abrasive ways about why they made their characters diverse. He emphasized that we had to learn to defend these things, because the racism in the industry is extremely deliberate.

Thinking back to the first story I ever started writing down (I was 7 or 8) about a group of stray cats who, every full moon, took the form of human kids. They actually were human kids, who had been killed (all at different times/by different people). Their bodies were each dumped by the side of the road where a cat had been hit by a car previously, and their souls landed in the cats' bodies. Eventually they all found each other and decided that every full moon, when they shifted, they'd try to solve each other's murders one by one. It was going to be a series, with each book focusing on a different kid's murder mystery. I told my mom about it once, briefly, and she said "Those cat books (warrior cats) are making you creepy."

What I have learnt about chatgtp while using it to write an action research paper:

Don't trust it with your quantitative data.

Don't trust it when it comes to finding citations. There are some better ai programmes (payable) for just this.

It's pretty ok for paraphrasing. You do need to read it very carefully through.

It's ok for summarising, mostly. You do need to check it through.

It does help you sound more professional. I'm not native English speaker so I struggle producing academic sounding text.

I haaaaate creating references so I use ai to format the reference list and I pray to God it's correct 'cause I ain't checking that shit.

So in the end I guess it has been a bit helpful. I really struggle with academic writing and ai made it a bit easier. I mean I still had to do the hard job of hunting the damn literature and doing the data entry and analysing. In the end it's really only good at polishing the text a bit and paraphrasing. And I hope it has not fucked up my reference list (I think I still have to go through them anyway).

I'm not sure if I should use ai again. Im afraid it might be hindering my development as a writer. And what I hear it might be bad for environment. So I guess I should just suck it up and learn to write.

Ok after a long break I think I could now fit some language study time to my schedule. I can't commit a lot though. Probs just 15 mins a day max because I am busy with work and kids and volunteering and other studies.

Do you think 15 minutes would be beneficial or is it way too little?
