Happy birthday to Lanning Chey! (April 30)
Lanning, side-eyeing at Ryung, Seraphina, and Icarus' direction: I support gay rights but not gay wrongs.
Despite their differences in morals, I think Icarus and Lanning mirror each other, in terms of ignoring their personal pain if it meant getting closer to their goal. I wonder if that's also why Icarus agreed to teach Lanning.
They might (this is just speculation) also share similar fates in the story: They try to make the world better, but they won't get to see the better world.
For Lanning, this is more literal; she's trying to use her position as admiral to improve things in Coelcaitus, but if/once the world's cael is silenced, she probably won't be able to see again. (I remember that when she was doused by Styx, she said she couldn't see, so I'm basing this theory off of that.)
For Icarus, we see her efforts to save humanity, but we see the cracks in her body spreading, so there's a chance she won't survive until the end.
In the right panel (Ep. 92), Eisner says "We've got perfect defense and ultimate mobility". He's so right... They could've been the Bob Cut Trio...
Happy birthday to Lanning from Blue Matter!!! 💜
