La Nuit du Chasseur Part 5 by The Perfect Denial
"Oh, God. No no no no please no, I don't know what you really want but please PLEASE let me go!"
"Shhhhh. It will be okay, my love. Just try to relax."
Grace moved off the bed and slowly took off her dress. Jared's breathing was near hyperventilation. To say he was scared was an understatement. He was certain he would die.
His mind flashed back to his childhood, his brother and more importantly his mother. Would they ever find out what happened to him? They would be crushed.
"Don't worry about them right now. I promise you will see them eventually.", Grace whispered.
She reached out toward the bottom of the mattress and retrieved a small knife. Sweat began to form on Jared's brow. Grace placed her hand on his face, cupped his cheek.
"This may sting just a little. But only for a moment."
She moved his head to the right and took the blade with her other hand, running it from behind his ear toward his collarbone. Thick sticky crimson rose to the surface. Grace leaned her head down and kissed where the blood was beginning to flow the quickest. With her tongue, she gently licked at the wound, smiling and breathing heavily.
"Mmmm", she moaned. "Much sweeter than I would have thought."
Jared began coughing and thrashed his legs, trying to throw Grace off of him. But she was like a lead weight on him. Pain seared through his body like a wildfire that was out of control. The edge of his vision began to shimmer. All he could focus on was the pain. No pleasure, no fear. Just desolation and pain. Then, it all changed.
Jared was in a forest laying on a patch of wet leaves. He raised his head a bit and looked around. Sunlight was spotlighting it's way through the heavy canopy above him. He breathed deeply and could smell the wet earth. Jared tentatively sat up. He gasped and breathed in deeply, choking
back tears of relief. He chuckled and wiped the tears that had begun falling from his eyes. Where was he? He knew that where ever he was now, he was safe. Maybe he went hiking and something happened? This area didn't look very familiar to him though.
He shifted to sit in a crouching position, fingers splayed into the ground before him. He looked down toward himself. No shirt, no shoes. Just a dusty old pair of faded jeans.
"Why go out hiking in this?", he thought. Something was nagging him, just on the edge of his memory. Something important. Something he should never forget.
With an impact of a sledgehammer, it hit him. The need to drink something, anything. The need was searing in the back of his throat. He stood up and began jogging through the trees. Then he saw it. In the middle of the forest, outlined by small mounds of rock was a raging river the color of crimson. Jared stopped short and inhaled sharply. That nagging in the back of his brain clicked again. That thirst in the back of his throat screamed.
He took a tenative step forward, spread his arms and flung himself into a river of blood, never once looking back.

Jared awoke to a completely darkened room. He lifted his head and immediately felt nauseous. His head was killing him. He started to place his hand on his forehead and realised he couldn't. His arms felt like lead weights. He tried again. Nothing. Turning his head, he looked to his left arm. It was then he realised why his arms felt the way they did. They were tied down to the sides of the bed. Anger immediately flooded through him. He jerked at his restraints but was getting nowhere fast. He laid his head back down on the bed. His eyes had begun to adjust to the darkness. He looked to his left and saw her sitting there on a wingback chair. Grace was staring at him with such a wicked little smile on her red lips it made him almost want to vomit. What the fuck had he gotten himself in to? This was no ordinary one night stand. He knew it now.
"I'm glad to see you finally awake Jared.", she crooned.
"What the fuck is this?! Why am I tied down?!", he screamed.
"Why, to make sure you don't go anywhere, of course. Oh… and to make sure you don't harm yourself while you undergo your...Trial."
"My… my what?! What the fuck are you talking about?!", Jared spat.
"Your Trial, Jared."
"Yeah, I got that the first time. God, my head.", Jared groaned.
"You have a...poison in your body right now, Jared. You see, I've been waiting for someone like you for a very, very long time. Centuries, even.", Grace murmured as she rose from her chair. She walked over to the bed and lightly touched Jared's face. Jared jerked his head away, feeling scorch marks raise on his skin where she had just touched him.
Grace leaned down beside him and placed her hand by his side.
"You see, I'm what some would call... a creature of the night. Quite a lonely existence if I do say so myself. All this time, all these years of being alone. Finally, I won't be alone any longer."
Grace bent closer to his lips, noticing the wild look in Jared's eyes.
"Please, don't be afraid. You've done nothing wrong. I just want you by my side. Forever."
Grace licked her lips and placed them tenderly on Jared's. He immediately felt his heart race, his head pound.
"What.. I don't understand. Are you going to kill me?"
"No, my beautiful Jared, quite the opposite actually. I'm going to help you live... forever."

They walked quickly down the almost empty street. The night was cold and their breath lingered in the crisp air. The street lamps gave everything in this part of the city an almost old world feel. They began making their way toward the outskirts of the city. Their footsteps echoed from the cobblestone street, down the alleyways, into what seemed like oblivion. Jared had been talking almost compulsively since leaving the club. Normally, he wasn't so talkative. The woman with him remained quiet, observant, almost as if she were retaining every single syllable he was uttering.
Suddenly, she stopped in front of an old home that seemed abandoned. "This is where I'm staying." Jared looked up and down the empty and eerily quiet street. "Um, here?", he asked and pointed toward the building."
"Yes", she replied. "Is something wrong?"
"No. I just thought you would be more IN town instead of out here in the middle of..."
"Nowhere?", she finished and laughed. "I wanted some peace and quiet. My stay here has been quite.... pleasant, actually. Besides, if you're planning on making a lot of noise later on Mr. Leto..."
"Wait. How the hell do you know my last name? Have you been following me? How do you know me?", he hissed between clenched teeth.
"Well", she smiled sweetly, "If you really want to know, come inside.", she winked and unlocked the door.
Every single nerve ending in Jared's body screamed at him to run. Just run. But he had to know. He had a feeling this night was not going to be like any other night he had ever experienced in his life.
Jared walked into the darkened doorway and looked back behind him. If something were to happen to him, no one would know. Not even his brother knew what he had been up to for the last several weeks. 'Seriously Jared, get a fucking hold on yourself. She's just a chick.', he thought. 'Maybe she was just following you around and you didn't realise it. Not like she's gonna do anything weird.'
Jared closed the door behind him. "So what's your name, beautiful?" The woman grinned as she finished lighting the candles in the hallway.
"You can call me.... Grace."
"Ok, Grace, now would you explain to me how you know me or at least my name?"
"Jared, Jared, Jared. Always the impatient one. Why don't we have a little fun first? Then I will tell you everything you want to know and more. As long as you behave.", Grace winked.
In the distance the wind howled through the empty streets. Ignoring the nagging feeling in the pit of his stomach, Jared tried to muster a smile. "Then let's begin."

"Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there... Wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before..." E.A. Poe
Ce n'est pas la réalité c'est un rêve. La Nuit du Chasseur. _______________________________ Berlin, 2003 He stood in the corner of the darkened club, leaning his head back, feeling the beat of the song drive into his skull. He closed his eyes drawing in the beat, letting it overtake his thoughts. He had no idea how long he had been standing there like that. When he opened his eyes, he saw her. She sat only a few feet away but somehow seemed distant, removed. Her ebony hair was pulled back into a style he was sure was from the 1940s. Even her lips were a cherry bomb red that reminded him of some photos he'd seen of Ava Gardner. She glanced up from the drink she was swirling in her cup and stared back. Unwavering. Intent. With eyes that would rival even the greenest of emeralds one could imagine. She seemed to be from another time. Another place. Maybe that was why he approached her. Maybe that was also why he had suddenly gotten the nerve to ask her if she was there alone.
"Yes, I am.", she softly replied. Even with the level of noise surrounding them, her voice rang out like a melodic bell.
He smiled and pointed at her drink. "Want something else?", he smiled as he licked his lips.
"No, thank you." Her voice was distinctly what you may call 'American'.
"So... what brings a beautiful girl like you to a sleazy place like this?"
"I could ask you the same. But that would be just answering your question with a question, and I'm sure you're not just interested in small talk.", she smiled.
Damn, she was good. "Yeah, you're right... so...", he stammered.
"Would you like to go somewhere else Jared?", she asked sweetly.
"Um... yeah... sure but how did you know my name? I would definitely remember you if we had."
She laughed. "No. We haven't. I guess you just look like a Jared to me." Jared stood up and offered her his hand. "Shall we then?"
She chuckled, "Lead the way."
