Lapis lacedaemonius is a volcanic rock found in a single, small source in Greece. It has been used as decoration throughout history, from making Minoan sealstones to the Cosmatesque inlays of the floor of Westminster Abbey, or as in the top picture here, as Roman opus sectile decoration.
All this is quite impressive for a stone found in a single village in mountainous Greece. Perhaps most striking is however the fact that the stone is known to have been processed already by Neanderthals.
