Too many thoughts on my mind and too many feelings in my heart right now—some tied to really old, foundational things that feel especially present at the moment. Being back here for this internship reminds me why I chose to move far away to a big city back in 2017.
A big part of that move was about my sexuality, and later, when I was diagnosed with ADHD at 23, it only confirmed for me that I never want to live in a place with fewer than 250,000 people again—ideally not even under 500,000.
Life in the sticks is already a bit of a minefield if you’re not straight, but it’s even more… I guess… soul-draining if you’re neurodivergent and just don’t quite fit in across so many contexts. Urban life has its downsides too, of course, but for me the trade-off is worth it. The sensory overload and the fast pace can be challenging, but they’re balanced by the much greater chances of finding community and belonging.
Because for me, “home” is more about belonging than anything else. This place will always be home in its own way too—being from this region is an important part of my identity, and there are things I genuinely miss about the people here when I’m away. But even with all its familiarity, I still miss feeling like I belong here. I felt that way as a teenager, and in some ways I still do, even though I can now see a lot more positives about this place than I used to.
There are plenty of things I actively dislike about the city I live in now, and I don’t see myself staying there forever—I’d actually like to move again in two or three years. But I still feel more like I belong there than I do here, and that’s because of the people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made—the ones with whom I can be my messy, unmasked ADHD self, no questions asked and no eyebrows raised, because they just get it.
The singer of this song had a very similar life trajectory, so I guess it shouldn't be a suprise that it resonates with me like it does. Beyond that, it’s simply a wonderful, deeply emotional piece of music—and, in a broader context, absolutely invaluable. Women writing love songs for women in German isn’t unheard of, of course, but it’s still relatively rare, especially with this level of acclaim.
