Foreign Correspondent  (1940 Hitchcock movie)

Pictured: Laraine Day (left) as Carol Fisher, Joel McCrea (right) as John Jones, and Eddie Conrad (center) as "Latvian" 

Plot: An American newspaperman (Joel McCrea) is sent to London to cover European politics just before WWII. In a recurring gag, a well-meaning but clueless foreign diplomat keeps talking sincerely and unstoppably to everyone around him in a language no one understands. Eventually it is revealed that he is speaking Latvian. Former vaudeville comic Eddie Conrad plays the diplomat; according to IMDB his character is called, simply, “Latvian.” 

Notes: It’s clear that Mr. Conrad’s lines were translated into Latvian, but not much energy was expended on making him pronounce them correctly. My family spent about an hour rewinding each of his scenes and trying to figure out what he was saying. In the scene pictured above, we think he's looking for the bathroom.
