Put your trust in Jay Freestyle’s artistic abilities, and you will come out with a stunning piece of body art.
Tattoo artist Jay Freestyle currently works at Dermadonna Custom Tattoos in Amsterdam and works primarily in freehand tattooing. Yes, Jay very rarely uses a stencil, and his clients put an immense amount of trust in his uninhibited style. This tattooing technique, however, is not for the faint of heart.
“It comes down to how confident you are in your ability and how well you do under pressure," Jay explained the qualities of a successful freehand tattoo artist. "You obviously need to be able to draw, but besides that, you need to be comfortable enough to not rely on a stencil and just trust that what you have in mind you will be able to translate onto the skin in one go.”

While others may be intimidated by tattooing without an exact stencil, Jay thrives in this style. For him, the process is thrilling and results in pieces that work with, not against, the human form.
“I find it easier to get the right flow and fit this way. I like the spontaneity of it all, it makes the whole process more exciting to not know what the end result is going to be," Jay described his choice to be a freehand artist. "It also gives me more control over the creative process because the collector won’t be looking at a fully rendered drawing, instead, just a basic compositional sketch. Of course though, not everything is done freehand, but the majority is.”
Amazingly, Jay produces a variety of tattoo styles through freehanding. That being said, however, he advises those looking to work in freehand to consider which styles really benefit from this technique. Some styles better lend themselves to the use of stencil and precision versus freehanding.
“Certain styles are better suited to be done freehand, and others not. If you want a perfect fit and flow of the body, then freehand is the better option. Some styles this is a necessity, for example Japanese, biomechanical, blackwork, and tribal. Usually styles that require a background or play around with accentuating a body part benefit from being done freehand, as the fit and flow will be perfect. It also fits better to tattoos that are large-scale designs," Jay explained. "Other styles, such as traditional, that play on more of a 'sticker' look are better done with a stencil because they need to be more precise and don’t often have to worry about flow or background.”

And since Jay is not limited to just one style, his admirers have defined Jay's work as it's own entity.
"The thing I like most about my style is it can’t really be categorized because I’ll always be evolving as an artist and so the style will always be changing. Sometimes when people try to explain or describe my style they, for a lack of better words, call it 'Jay Style,' which I kind of like. It’s Jay style, it’s whatever I want it to be."
Surprisingly, according to this talented artist, the best is yet to come.
"I feel I’m just getting started in my career. With art there’s never an end to what you can learn and accomplish. I will continue to push my limits as an artist and a person, so there’s definitely more to come,"Jay said.
