On June 9, 1978 Larry Holmes defeated Ken Norton by a 15 Round Split Decision at the Caesars Palace Sports Pavilion to win the World Boxing Council Heavyweight Title. Norton came into the bout a 6 to 5 favorite. Norton's purse was $2.3 million and Holmes' was $300,000. After defeating Norton, Holmes held the WBC title until 1983. He defended the title against 19 fighters, the 2nd most in history behind Joe Louis (21). The March 2001 edition of The Ring Magazine listed the final round of the Holmes-Norton bout as the 7th most exciting round in boxing history.
