So I turned on my television and there was this random show called “Jersey Matters” on, and the first thing that appeared was some old disgruntled white man who began ranting about how the award shows nowadays are covering too much politics; all because they dissed his orange president, made Hilary Clinton make an appearance, and talked about #MeToo and Dreamers. Then he tried to point out the irony by shaming backup dancers for the way they dressed. And I’ve never wanted to punch a racist grandpa more. It’s so irritating when white people complain about how “they don’t watch the [insert event here] for politics because it’s supposed to be entertainment.” It’s like when all those men were complaining about the NFL kneeling during the national anthem, yet missing the entire part where they have to stand for the national anthem in the first place--that’s politics in sports!
Bottom line, everything media is involved in politics somehow, whether it’s direct or not. Stop acting like Grammy and SAG award shows don’t spend millions of dollars just to put their racist award shows together in the first place and stop acting like gathering ratings to make more money aren’t their priority. There’s always some sort of ulterior motive whether you like what your watching or not. All of this exists in the first place because of our economic system. Money = Politics. It’s all drawn from politics. It’s always been that way. The only difference is that the politics aren’t discreet this time. Also, you can’t watch the sag awards and not expect actresses (who were mainly at the forefront of #MeToo) to not talk about sexual harassment in their industry? That’s like me going to a BLM rally and not wanting anyone to cover police brutality? It doesn’t make sense.
And while I sit here, watching this rotten potato, with eyes and comb-over, speak, all I can think to myself is, “Wow. How great it must be to be a Cishet White Man™ and be completely oblivious and unaffected by the politics that other women and poc call life and only be bothered by it when it shows up on your tv.”
