Existentialists, deconstructionists, and Marxists are not afraid of Hegel. Socrates never heard of Hegel and presumably was not afraid of him. Maybe fear of Hegel really is the clearest definition of analytic philosophy one is likely to come up with. Such definition would also explain perhaps why analytic philosophers have such difficulty explaining what analytic philosophy is. For if Hegel is not even part of the history of philosophy as we think of it, and if the essential property of our own philosophy consists in its relationship to Hegel, then the essence of our own type of philosophy would consist in relation to something nonexistent!

Also, I should say something about Larry Powers (who I quoted here): He is a remarkable thinker and has been very instrumental in getting the analytic philosophers I know to re-read Hegel. My current philosophical education is largely indebted to his book on non-contradiction.
So, he isn't simply a mean jerk or anything like that. He can just be a bit cantankerous (like most elderly philosophers I know).
Philosophers aren't human beings. Human beings are stupid.

The irony is just too much for me. The inhumanity of writing off the intelligence of another human being is so characteristic of certain philosophers.
