White 白
By Kenya Hara
Published by Lars Müller Publishers, 2010
‘White’ is not a book about colors, it’s about the idea of ‘White’ and ‘Emptiness’. In fact, the character ‘白’ for white is part of the compound character for emptiness. This book has been making me think about connections between emptiness, desire, design, and a minimalist style- I consider minimalism and emptiness share some roots together but has different spirits. Here’s a bit part from the book “The roots of expressions like … ‘less is more’ are subtly different than those that underlie emptiness. Emptiness does not merely imply simplicity of form, logical sophistication and the like. Rather, emptiness provides a space within which our imaginations can run free, vastly enriching our powers of perception and our mutual comprehension. Emptiness is this potential.”
