Wrestling with Language

The words we use to describe something can be pretty helpful in building imagery or a moment, but sometimes if we use "flowery" language it can cause a disconnect between the audience and the speaker/writer even if the words were used correctly.

It should be important to note that sometimes if you're using a big word just for the sake of using the word, you may not achieve the desired effect.

Since I am a wrestling fan I'll use two wrestlers as an example. Lars Sullivan (he's a creep ik but just stay with me) and Keith Lee.

I don't know what possessed me to think of Lars Sullivan at work the other day, but it did make me realize something. His gimmick was that he was an intelligent big man. He came to the ring in a creepy manner and would use large cumbersome words when he talked to really drive home how smart he is.

Now I'm not saying he's an idiot in real life, but for me, it never truly felt like he was intelligent when he used these words. It always felt fake and that he was just trying to sound smarter than he actually was.

When the words you use don't feel like they naturally fit you it can cause a disconnect with your audience and in any medium that is the opposite of what you want, but when we look at someone like Keith Lee we get a very different story.

Recently Keith has been trending on Twitter because he looks like the type of guy that would use words like succulent, whimsical, and various other things that make him sound intelligent and polite. This is because he is an intelligent and polite man.

When Lee cuts a promo he doesn't force these words into a promo to sound smart. He uses them because that's how he talks normally. It doesn't feel forced because it isn't and that's the difference.

When you use words you must make your audience feel as if it wasn't just shoved into the sentence to make you sound smart. It has to flow like water. Otherwise, you run the risk of alienating them and eventually losing them.
